How your pharmacy benefits work
Bring your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) member ID card to your in-network pharmacy along with a prescription from your doctor. You can also ask your doctor to send the prescription straight to your pharmacy.
Your pharmacist will automatically send a claim to Blue Cross NC. Once the claim processes, Blue Cross NC may cover a portion of the total cost without any additional paperwork required. Depending on your coverage, you may only be responsible for paying a copay.
Understanding prescription drug costs
Some prescription drug plans require you to pay a reduced cost – also called a copay – when picking up medications. The rest of the cost is covered by your health insurance plan.
Drugs come in 3 forms: brand-name, generic, and specialty. Most generic drugs have a lower copay, while specialty drugs tend to have the highest copay.

A generic drug is identical, or bioequivalent, to a brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use. However, depending upon your benefit design, you may substantially lower your out-of-pocket cost by using a generic drug instead of the brand name one.
